Bass

The string bass or double bass is a traditional Classical music instrument, but is also very versatile. Tyson places great emphasis on mastering sight reading and aural skills to increase the overall abilities on the instrument. Under Tyson’s tutelage, you can learn anything from bluegrass styles, to jazz, to classical repertoire. It is an instrument that is challenging but very rewarding as well.

The bass guitar has been a staple in popular musical styles since its inception in 1950 by Leo Fender. James Jamerson of Motown acclaim was considered the first great master, followed by the likes of Jaco Pastorius and many more. With Tyson’s direction, you will come to know how to be a versatile bassist in all styles of American popular music, including: how to invent a bassline, groove and solo in each style. As a bassist, it is important to learn how to establish groove with impeccable timing. In Tyson’s studio, he simulates live grooves via a drumset and piano/guitar accompaniments to create an environment similar to a live setting. Ear training is also an essential part of success on the bass guitar. You will receive instruction in pitch recognition and transposing as it pertains to basslines. No more TABS!

Beginner Piano

These lessons provide straight forward instruction for beginners on the piano. Learn how to play with both hands, how to read music, learn songs, develop repertoire, and gain music knowledge that beginners can understand. You’ll be a successful pianist on your way to great things!

Beginner to Intermediate Voice

These vocal music lessons provide straight forward instruction for all ages and skill levels. Learn how to sing with a full voice, control pitch, hear and translate music, read music, sing in different styles, and apply and understand music theory in the simplest terms.

Music theory/Songwriting

Explore the building blocks of music through discovery and application such as: pitch, rhythm, meter, harmony, melody, scales and form. The art of songwriting gives way to ultimate musical expression and ownership over creation. It’s fun and exciting with a great sense of musical purpose and accomplishment. Songwriting lessons come with instruction in the guidelines and craft of composing music and lyrics.

Cello

The cello has been a staple of classical music from chamber music to symphonies. Tyson provides instruction for the necessary skills for success with classical music. Cello lessons will guide you to ascertaining the proper techniques; from holding the instrument to bowing and fingerboard pedagogy. Tyson focuses on learning scales in all keys, repertoire for the cello, sight reading, orchestral pedagogy, and performance techniques. You could be the next Yo Yo Ma!

RON MILES-TRUMPET

An adventurous trumpeter, Ron Miles has made a strong impression with his Gramavision releases. A resident of Denver since he was 11, he began playing the trumpet seriously in junior high school and studied music at the University of Denver (1981-1985) and the Manhattan School of Music (1986). In addition to local gigs, Miles visited Italy in the summer of 1992 with the play Sophisticated Ladies and was a member of the Mercer Ellington Orchestra for a couple years. He played frequently with Bill Frisell during 1994-1995, also recording with the guitarist, and worked as assistant professor of music at Denver’s Metropolitan Stage College. Ron Miles has recorded for Prolific (1986) and Capri (1990), as well as several advanced sets for Gramavision.

BILL FRISELL-GUITAR

Eclectic and versatile, guitarist Bill Frisell always manages to sound distinctively himself while fitting into any playing situation. He has become one of the most influential guitarists of the modern era with a wide-open approach that reconciles the sound of rock and R&B guitar with the sophisticated harmonic style and methods of jazz.

Born in Baltimore, Bill Frisell played clarinet throughout his childhood in Denver, Colorado. His interest in guitar began with his exposure to pop music on the radio. Soon, the Chicago Blues became a passion through the work of Otis Rush, B.B. King, Paul Butterfield and Buddy Guy. In high school, he played in bands covering pop and soul classics, James Brown and other dance material. Later, Bill studied music at the University of Northern Colorado before attending Berklee College of Music in Boston where he studied with John Damian, Herb Pomeroy and Michael Gibbs. In 1978, Frisell moved for a year to Belgium where he concentrated on writing music. In this period, he toured with Michael Gibbs and first recorded with German bassist Eberhard Weber. Bill moved to the New York City area in 1979 and stayed until 1989. He now lives in Seattle.

BRIAN BLADE-DRUMS

A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Brian Blade established himself as a versatile, accomplished drummer early in his career, appearing on albums by the likes of Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett, and Bob Dylan. Blade released his first album, Brian Blade Fellowship, at the age of 27 in 1998, and followed two years later with Perceptual, both on Blue Note. Always an in-demand sideman and collaborator, Blade continued to find work with a bevy of artists, including Joni Mitchell, Bill Frisell, and Wayne Shorter. Ten years after releasing his first album as the Brian Blade Fellowship, he returned with Season of Changes in 2008, this time on Verve. A year later, he released the solo Americana singer/songwriter effort Mama Rosa for the label. At the beginning of 2014, the BBF band re-signed with Blue Note in a cooperative deal with the Shreveport, Louisiana-based Mid-City Records. Their fourth album together, Landmarks, was issued in April of 2014. The quintet was augmented by guitarists Marvin Sewell and Jeff Parker. Blade was part of a celebrated trio that included guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel and bassist Larry Grenadier on Driftwood for Deutsche Grammophon a year later. In 2017, Blade and his fellow sidemen in Wayne Shorter’s longstanding quartet — pianist Danilo Perez and bassist John Patitucci — recorded together as a trio for the first time. Their debut album, Children of the Light, was issued by Mack Avenue in the fall of 2017. During the same season, Blade’s Fellowship band reunited to release Body and Shadow on Blue Note. Recorded in the historic Columbus Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island, the album was co-written, arranged, and produced by Blade and pianist Jon Cowherd.

Ron Carter recently received the Guinness World Record title for most recorded jazz bassist in history, with well over 2200 recording credits to his name. From his work with the Miles Davis Quintet in the 1960s to his collaborations with musicians like Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Hank Jones, his numerous projects as a bandleader, and his work outside of the jazz realm with artists like Billy Joel and A Tribe Called Quest, Ron has truly shaped our conception of the sound of the double bass.
